BMW i8 Case Study
As a well-known luxury and supercar service garage based in Bangalore, we’ve serviced and modified various cars from brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and so on. But interestingly, we recently had the opportunity to work on a BMW i8 Hybrid System.
This is a significant achievement as there are no other garages in the city that specialize in servicing BMW i vehicles. As of now, the only other option for owners of BMW i vehicles is to send their cars to the BMW service center in Chennai. In this blog, we will discuss the issues we encountered while servicing the BMW i8 hybrid system, the diagnosis and repair process we followed, along with the results we achieved.
Problem Identification:
The BMW i8 that came to our garage had a drivetrain error and regenerative braking was not working. We connected the car to the original BMW diagnostic tool to understand the exact nature of the problem. The diagnostic tool revealed that the fuel pump was faulty and a few wires in the hybrid line were damaged. These issues were the cause of the drivetrain error and the failure of the regenerative braking system.
Diagnosis:
Once we identified the problem, we began the diagnosis process to find out the root cause of the issues. We carefully examined the fuel pump and found that it had failed due to wear and tear. We also checked the hybrid line and found that a few wires had been damaged, which was causing additional problems.
Repair Process:
To ensure the safety of the car and our technicians, we disconnected the hybrid system before beginning any repairs. Our first step was to replace the damaged wires in the hybrid system. We used high-quality, OEM parts to ensure the repair was of the highest quality. After fixing the wires, we moved on to replace the faulty fuel pump. As we had the original BMW diagnostic tool, we were able to test the new fuel pump and confirm that it was working correctly.
Testing:
With the repairs complete, we reconnected the hybrid system and ran a series of tests to ensure everything was functioning as it should. We tested the regenerative braking system, and it was now working correctly. We also tested the drivetrain and confirmed that the error was no longer present. Finally, we took the car out for a test drive to ensure that everything was working correctly and that the car was performing as expected.
